The calendar has turned to August, and Louisiana high school football players have started ramping up their preseason practice routines.
But a few final major recruiting dominoes continue to fall into place for the state’s new senior class, while a few favorites also arise for a couple more top juniors.
This week’s episode of Louisiana vs. All Y’all’s “Recruit Dat Boot” with Jerit Roser and Sam Spiegelman focuses on the latest 2026 commitments, including arguably the state’s top quarterback in the class pledging to an out-of-state Power-Four program and a couple of in-state programs landing potential steal in local standouts just a short drive up the road.
St. Thomas More quarterback Cole Bergeron announced his plans to join Virginia Tech’s recruiting class, as the Hokies clearly prioritized the 6-foot-4, 210-pound passer this summer to take the lead on a list of suitors that also included Colorado, Georgia Tech and others.
“Yeah, we spoke about this last week, but you and I both saw him as an underclassman, and I think that the arrow has continued to point up for Bergeron,” said Spiegelman, a national recruiting analyst for the Rivals network. “Leading into his senior year, this is as excited as I’ve been about Cole at any point in his development.”
Northwestern State and Grambling State meanwhile managed to keep a couple of Shreveport stars in the 318 with the commitments of North DeSoto quarterback Luke Delafield and Evangel Christian linebacker Damari Drake.
Bergeron and Delafield have been two of the state’s three-man top tier of 2026 quarterbacks throughout their high school careers, and Drake enters his senior season ranked at No. 41 in the class by Louisiana vs. All Y’all after an all-state junior season in 2024.
Additionally, Jerit and Sam share a quick pulse check on the couple of committed seniors most worth monitoring as potential flip candidates in the final months of their recruiting processes and also look at apparent favorites developing for 2027 quarterbacks Elijah Haven (Dunham) and Malachi Zeigler (Benton) — both of whom are in the top 10 of Louisiana vs. All Y’all’s rankings for their class.
