Same drama, opposite script.
One year after Franklin Parish set the tone early, Calvary Baptist (2-1) flipped the start and then held on late as the LSWA’s Class 4A No. 1 Patriots (2-1) ran out of clock in a 33-30 thriller in Shreveport.
Sophomore quarterback Hudson Price ripped a 51-yard strike to junior Braylon Huglon on the second snap to light the fuse.
Franklin Parish quarterback Dezyrian “Pook” Ellis, an LSU defensive back commit, answered with a composed march, hitting receivers Malique Credit and Kaidon Seals and using his legs to convert a pivotal third down — until Calvary’s defense bowed up.
Sophomore defensive back Tripp Bachman (yes, those Bachmans) came up with a crucial sack on fourth down to flip the possession.
Calvary, the No. 6 team in the LSWA Class 2A rankings, seized control with a 13-play, 78-yard drive. Price converted four third downs — the last an 18-yard dart to Huglon — to claim a 13-0 lead just before the first-quarter horn.
The Cavs stacked momentum with another defensive stand, then leaned on bruising junior back Z’ryan Miles to bleed clock on a 13-play, 42-yard march to set up senior kicker Ty Knight for a 34-yarder and a 16-0 cushion.
Junior Pierce Carey punched the ball free as Ellis loaded to throw on the next drive, gifting Calvary a short field — only for the Cavs to fumble through the end zone and hand Franklin Parish a momentum swing.
Ellis capitalized with an eye-popping scramble and a screen to Seals to set the Patriots up late in the half.
With 10 seconds left, Ellis heaved to the end zone. But two-way threat Huglon broke on the ball and sprinted 103 yards the other way as the horn sounded. Knight’s point-after kick sent Calvary to halftime up, 23-0.
But coach Adrian Burnette’s Patriots came out of the break swinging.
Ellis hit Seals twice: first a 25-yard rip across the middle, then a roll-out dart at the front pylon to finally crack the scoreboard, 23-6.
Calvary’s response was immediate. Senior Garrett Lee ripped a 57-yard kick return, a penalty moved the ball to the 15, and on third down Price found big tight end Brady Martinez to extend the series. Miles hammered in from 3 yards out, and Knight made it 30-6.
Franklin Parish kept coming. Ellis slipped a swing pass to running back Trey Martin, who streaked 44 yards down the sideline for six.
The Patriot defense added to the momentum when Michigan State defensive line commit Chris Addison snatched a one-handed interception and housed it from 32 yards to pull within 30-18.
Deep on its own end and behind the sticks, Calvary took a shot that Jacolby Brooks high-pointed for a Franklin Parish interception.
Ellis moved the chains with his legs, and Martin jump-cut through the line for a 31-yard burst to pull within one score with 14 minutes left, 30-24.
Calvary needed an answer and got one from Huglon, who ripped a 40-yard jet sweep on the first snap to the Patriots’ 21.
Franklin Parish dug in, anchored by Addison and Texas State pledge Tavon Bell, and forced a kick, which Knight drilled from 28 yards to open the fourth — points that proved to be the difference.
The Patriots mounted a 71-yard drive, capped by Ellis to Martin on an 18-yard wheel up the sideline that cut the margin to 33-30.
But Calvary shifted into its six-minute drill, milking the clock before handing the ball back to the Patriots at their own 20 with under two minutes remaining. And the Cavs’ defense made the last stand. Franklin Parish ran out of time.
