Evangel Christian paired a shake-back to its typically high-powered offensive ways with a couple timely fourth-down stops on defense Friday to lock up District 1-5A in emphatic fashion.
The Eagles (8-2, 8-0) claimed their first district championship since 2019 with a 55-27 defeat of Parkway (9-1, 7-1), handing the Panthers their first loss on the season.
Parkway appeared poised late in the first half to cut into a 33-20 Evangel Christian lead.
Instead, the Eagles spoiled the Panthers’ opportunity from the 1-yard line, as a Bennett Speer pass deflection highlighted a fourth-down stand to maintain the two-score lead.
And when Parkway had a red-zone chance to trim a 42-27 deficit midway through the third, senior defensive lineman Nick Lopez sliced through the line on fourth down for a game-changing sack.
LSU-committed quarterback Peyton “Pop” Houston capitalized on the momentum boost to lead the Eagles down the field and eventual connect with senior pass-catcher Charlie Abraham on a 22-yard scoring strike to stretch the lead to 49-27 and out of reach for Parkway.
The critical defensive stops came after a back-and-forth first half of explosive plays by both teams and a combined 53 points.
Arkansas commit Ashton Dawson got the scoring started for the Eagles with a 2-yard touchdown early in the first.
Parkway would answer when senior quarterback Kaleb “KB” Williams hit his big wide receiver Gary Burney Jr. on a 25-yard dot — knotting the score at 6-6 after both teams failed to convert their extra-point attempts.
The Panthers recovered an onside kick, but failed to recover. And Houston led his offense on back-to-back scoring drives, connecting with speedy receiver Demarkus Evans, who pinballed his way to a 60-yard touchdown, and then Louisiana Tech commit Johnny Casey Jr., giving the Eagles the early two-score lead, 20-6.
Both teams would exchange scores again when Parkway chipped away at the lead with a scoring connection from Williams to Antonio Gladney, only for Evangel running back Damari Drake (Grambling State) to quickly answer with a 57-yard scamper to make it a two-score lead again, 27-14.
The Panthers got a boost from their defense when Mark Copenhaver reeled in an interception that set up a Damian Dacaldacal 9-yard rushing touchdown to put the score at 27-20, but that’s as close as the Panthers would get before Evangel opened it up in the second half.
The Eagles were able to keep Parkway at bay in the second half with their big defensive stops, while extending their lead late in the game with two more rushing touchdowns by Drake.
