Evangel QB Peyton “Pop” Houston becomes LSU’s first 2027 commit

Peyton “Pop” Houston became Louisiana’s first 2027 prospect to announce his college commitment Monday.

And the record-breaking Evangel Christian passer won’t be heading far as he chose home-state LSU over Oklahoma, USC, Texas, Texas A&M and a long list of other offers from coast-to-coast.

Louisiana vs. All Y’all’s top-ranked 2027 quarterback and No. 2 overall prospect became the first member of the Tigers’ commitment class.

Houston would, at the moment, become LSU’s highest-ranked high school quarterback signee in five years.

Programs from across the country have heavily recruited Houston during the course of his process, including national analysts sharing forecasts in favor of USC or Oklahoma.

But LSU, offensive coordinator Joe Sloan and the opportunity to represent the home state at the next level all consistently intrigued Houston and his family more than many fans or reporters recognized.

That positive momentum continued to gain steam through this weekend as the Houstons visited Baton Rouge for LSU’s 20-10 defeat of Florida in the SEC opener in front of a lively Tiger Stadium crowd — and felt the prioritization of the young quarterback as a potential cornerstone of the program’s 2027 class.

The consensus four-star prospect across major national recruiting networks Rivals, 247 and ESPN also holds offers from Clemson, Notre Dame, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Penn State, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Arkansas, TCU, SMU and Baylor

He was among Louisiana’s first 2027 prospects to begin receiving college offers, even prior to his freshman year, and was one of the only five quarterbacks in the class Sloan and LSU offered last September.

And Houston backed up the early attention with an LSWA Class 5A all-state sophomore campaign in his first full season of varsity action and strong showings on the 7-on-7 and college camp circuits.

The 6-foot, 195-pound passer completed 310 and his 443 passes (70%) for the state-leading 4,480 yards and 38 touchdowns this past fall, while also rushing for another 690 yards and seven more scores.

He earned national headlines by his sixth start of the season, even as his Eagles struggled overall through the first half of the season to find their rhythm until more of their players became available.

The Cotton Valley native threw for a record-breaking 817 yards and accounted for 10 touchdowns in a wild, 77-76 loss to Captain Shreve during District 1-5A action.
