LSU continues adding transfer weapons with highest-ranked commitment yet

LSU continued adding experienced offensive weapons to its quickly growing 2026 transfer class Tuesday.

Charlotte running back Rod Gainey Jr. and Kansas State wide receiver Jayce Brown became the latest portal prospects to commit to the Tigers, bringing their total to eight players and six offensive skill players in the past three days.

Brown’s pledge early Tuesday evening marked the highest-ranked win thus far in the haul and arguably the most-proven track record.

The 6-foot-1, 165-pound Fort Walton Beach, Fla., native and three-star prospect out of Choctawatchee Academy caught 115 passes for 1,972 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed 14 times for another 161 yards and a score in three seasons with Big 12 member Kansas State.

He was ranked the No. 27 overall prospect and No. 3 wide receiver in the transfer portal, according to On3, at the time of his announcement.

Brown joined Jackson Harris (Hawaii) and Eugene “Tre” Brown III (Old Dominion) as receiver commitments to new coach Lane Kiffin, offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. and wide receiver coach George McDonald each of the past three days.

Gainey gives LSU a transfer running back commitment for the second straight day after Utah freshman Raycine Guillory made the move Monday, along with Pittsburgh tight end Malachi Thomas.

The 6-foot, 185-pound rising sophomore spent two years at Charlotte seeing limited action in a redshirt 2024 season before appeared in 11 games this fall and carrying 74 times for 260 yards and a touchdown and catching 16 passes for another 44 yards.

His two-year totals with the 49ers were 78 carries for 289 yards and a touchdown and 17 receptions for 57 yards in 13 career games.

Both new backs arrive with the bulk of their college eligibility still intact — Guillory with four years and Gainey with three — as Kiffin, Weis and new running backs coach Kevin Smith work to retool the position around rising sophomore Harlem Berry.

The Tigers are working to replace nearly all of their 2025 production aside from Berry and rising junior tight end Trey’Dez Green.

LSU has added six new weapons on that side of the ball during the past three days, as well as defensive additions Tuesday of Boise State safety Ty Benefield and Clemson defensive tackle Stephiylan Green earlier Tuesday to bring their total to eight.

And Kiffin and company continue to host other key portal targets, such as Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt.
