One of Louisiana’s fastest-rising 2027 prospects will stay in-state for college after all, as LSU continued its recruiting hot streak Sunday with a notable flip.

The Tigers pried Parkway star Gary Burney Jr. from Houston’s haul of pass-catchers from The Boot, he shared this weekend as he wrapped up his official visit.

Burney joined Central’s Marcus Watson Jr. and Ruston’s Josiah Morgan in former Tulane coach Willie Fritz and the Cougars’ commitment class during an official visit at the end of May.

But, by then, he had already locked in Baton Rouge trip for the third weekend in June and reported an offer from LSU shortly after announcing his Houston pledge.

The Tigers appeared to continue gaining momentum during the past few weeks and finished swinging the promising pass-catcher’s college plans to purple and gold during the weekend.

Burney is the No. 18 overall prospect and No. 3 wide receiver in Louisiana vs. All Y’all’s latest 2027 class rankings.

The athletic 6-foot-4, 200-pound target came out of a breakout junior season still largely under the recruit radar despite putting up huge numbers and showing even bigger flashes of long-term potential.

He caught 76 passes for 1,267 yards and 15 touchdowns with his long frame, good speed and leap and ball skills among the best in Louisiana’s class both tracking across or down the field and beating defenders at the catch point.

His spring included top performer recognition at the inaugural Louisiana vs. All Y’all Elite Prospects Camp in early February and an offer list that caught fire through April and May with Texas Southern, UAB, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Louisiana Tech, Houston, Lamar, UTSA, South Florida, Texas State, Baylor, Connecticut, Tulane and ultimately LSU all making moves.

He becomes the Tigers’ 10th addition to its 2027 class in just 15 days and the 14th member of the group overall, including six of Louisiana’s top prospects.

Burney brings not only a talented, but a familiar target for quarterback commit Peyton “Pop” Houston with the two having worked together on the 7-on-7 circuit.

And along with Ruston tight end Ahmad Hudson, Cecilia athlete/receiver Braylon Calais and Franklin Parish running back Trey Martin, the Tigers continue to stockpile the incoming cohort with a slew of big, athlete and versatile weapons with notable homegrown Louisiana flavor.
