Zachary joins rare, but recent company with basketball double-repeat

Coach Jonathan McClinton closed a beaming postgame interview with the LHSAA Network late Saturday after his Zachary boys basketball team’s dramatic, second-straight Division-I Non-Select state championship with a simple question.

Just a week earlier, the Broncos’ counterpart on the girls side under coach Tami Reynolds-McClure had mounted a furious second-half rally to complete a repeat of their own.

Zachary joined rare — but particularly recent — company by pulling off the double-repeat, simultaneously back-to-back titles by its boys and girls programs.

“I would love ask Siri or ask ChatGPT how many times has it happened,” “Coach Tami obviously does a great job, an awesome job, and that’s the first person I saw when we walked over here, and I sprinted to her, I ran to her, because we cry together, we laugh together, we hug together. We do everything together, so to see both programs be successful like they are, that’s unheard of to me.”

Louisiana vs. All Y’all decided to save the robots the distraction from caricaturing everyone at their jobs and just tackled the research on our own.

Zachary became the fifth school to manage the elite feat in LHSAA five-on-five basketball, but the second in as many years and fifth in just over two decades.

But, of note, the Broncos and Lady Broncos are the first to do so in the state’s highest levels: Class 5A/Division I.

Wossman’s girls are currently on a run of five straight state championships, and its boys were just one win shy this year of a third-straight. In other words, the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats double-repeated in 2024 and 2025 and make a strong run at pulling off a double-threepeat.

Lafayette Christian doubled-threepeated from 2017 to 2019 with its boys program’s three titles coinciding perfectly with its girls’ launching into eight championships in nine years.

Zachary also joins fellow Baton Rouge area schools University Lab and Southern Lab, both of which coincidentally also won girls crowns again this year.

Last week, U-High’s girls won their first championship since a 2014-2015 repeat, which coincided with its boys’ 2014-2016 threepeat.

Southern Lab’s girls won their third-straight and eighth title all-time, including their second threepeat after a 2002-2004 run, which overlapped two years with a boys 2003-2005 threepeat.

So, Zachary isn’t the first school to pull off the impressive achievement, but it is one of just a handful — and the first to do so at its level.
