On a night on which Drew Brees and his son were in town to face Isidore Newman, a young local quarterback put on a headline-stealing show of his own at Brees Family Field just around the corner.
Metairie Park Country Day sophomore Jack Grace lit up the scoreboard at The Willow School for a Louisiana-record nine passing touchdowns in a 70-35 blaze past the Lions.
Grace finished 37-for-46 for 568 yards, according to the school, with the scoring strikes going to junior wide receivers Colin Snyder and Preston Snyder, senior wide receiver Paul “Poo” Micken, twice to junior wide receiver Curtis McAllister and a game-high four to UC Santa Barbara basketball commitment Kellen “KB” Brewer.
No Louisiana quarterback had ever thrown more than eight touchdowns in a single game — a mark famously hit by Evangel star Peyton “Pop” Houston, now an LSU commit, during his record 817-yard game two years ago — according to the National Federation of State High School Associations record books.
Senior running back Justin Drago ran a second-quarter score into the end zone to help chip into the 70-point onslaught, the highest by the Cajuns in at least a decade and tied for the highest by any team early in this season.
And Grace’s epic performance coming on the field named for Drew Brees and his family on a night the New Orleans Saints legend was in town coaching his son’s team just a half mile away against Country Day’s district rival only adds another memorable wrinkle to the special night.
Brees, who was inducted to the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame last month, is the passing game coordinator for Santa Fe Christian (Solana Beach, Calif.), which beat Isidore Newman, 41-7, including a touchdown pass by son Baylen Brees on a wide receiver sweep-pass.
