Another of Louisiana’s top 2028 prospects left LSU’s campus Thursday with an offer from the Tigers.
Abbeville star Jacolby Campbell joined an elite list of rising juniors around The Boot to now have the opportunity to play for the home-state program after his standout performance at the program’s latest camp.
“The offer means everything,” he said. “I appreciate coach (Lane) Kiffin and (wide receivers) coach George McDonald for believing in me enough to, like you said, pull the trigger and offer me a scholarship.”
Even prior to the offer, LSU had been recruiting Campbell, who has been a major playmaker on both sides of the ball for two years for his Wildcats and picked up more than 10 offers throughout the past year-plus.
The 6-foot-1, 177-pound pass-catcher and all-around athlete said he had heard primarily from McDonald and felt comfortable with the him and the Tigers’ staff overall at the early stage in their relationship, but looked forward to continuing to communicate and visit more “before you make that big choice at the end of your high school career.”
Of what McDonald said stood out Thursday, Campbell said: “Obviously from my film, my film is good. He said he liked. Coming out here and competing, every coach loves when you compete. And my route-running, listening to details and getting depth on your route, getting low, breaking down and carrying on from drills.”
Campbell has grown up just over an hour from LSU and admired the home-state program and has also been particularly intrigued about the track record that Kiffin, McDonald and company bring from Ole Miss.
“It’s all about how they’ve got one of the best offense in college football,” he said of conversations with McDonald during the new offensive staff’s first few months in Baton Rouge. “I mean it goes to show what they carry one from their other college that they came from to here. They’re gonna do good over here obviously.
“It would be a great opportunity to come here to get better and work with some good coaches who have a good resume, who have a good background. Coming from what they did at Ole Miss, I can’t tell you the receivers’ names, but three receivers had close to 1,000 yards and one with 1,000 yards. And that’s good. That’s anything you would want to look for, because that just goes to show you that not just one person is touching the ball, but everybody’s eating. And that’s good. I like that.”
The No. 3 overall prospect in Louisiana vs. All Y’all’s 2028 class rankings also holds offers from Tulane, Arkansas, Florida State, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Penn State, Houston, TCU, UTSA and Old Dominion.
And he’s currently set to visit at Ole Miss next week to wrap up his planned camp slate during a summer in which he’s primarily focused on his workouts and diet to continue getting bigger, stronger and better at his craft.
“I’m very competitive,” he said. “I love to compete. You’ve gotta love to compete. I love to play one-on-ones, and I love to get better. If you feel you’re better than me, I feel I’m better than you always, but we can come sharpen each other — iron sharpens iron. I love that, and I love football.”
