A pair of new No. 1 teams topped their respective classifications this week in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s latest statewide high school football polls released Monday.
North DeSoto and Jewel Sumner topped the Class 4A and Class 3A lists, respectively, after another chaotic weekend of action that saw previous top-ranked teams Franklin Parish and St. James among the long list of notable losses.
The Griffins lead off the Class 4A rankings for the first time since Week 2 of last season, while the Cowboys earn their first No. 1 ranking in school history.
Jewel Sumner’s highest previous rankings came as No. 2 in Class 2A in Week 4 of the 1989 season.
In Class 3A alone, four of the top five teams in last week’s poll fell, and six different teams earned at least one first-place votes this week in a tightly packed top of the rankings.
Edna Karr and Haynesville remain unanimous No. 1 teams in Class 5A and Class 1A, respectively, and Lafayette Christian is just one vote shy of that distinction in Class 2A.
