LSU announces new coaching staff under Lane Kiffin

The bulk of LSU’s retooled coaching staff under newly hired Lane Kiffin is now official.

The Tigers announced the additions of 11 new assistants Monday, some of whom have been known to be Baton Rouge-bound since Kiffin’s introduction Dec. 1 and others whom have taken the bulk of the month to finalize.

Kiffin brings much of his offensive staff from Ole Miss, including offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr., co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Joe Cox, associate head coach and running backs coach Kevin Smith and passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach George McDonald in their same capacities.

The Rebels’ senior analyst and pass game specialist Dane Stevens and offensive graduate assistant Sawyer Jordan will take on large roles as the quarterbacks and inside receivers coaches, respectively.

And longtime SEC offensive line coach Eric Wolford, who spent the past two seasons at Kentucky, will head to Baton Rouge in the same position.

LSU will retain defensive coordinator Blake Baker, edge rushers coach Kevin Peoples, secondary coach Corey Raymond and safeties coach Jake Olsen.

The Tigers announced Monday the additions of co-defensive coordinator and line backers coach Chris Kiffin, defensive line coach Sterling Lucas, and assistant defensive line coach and pass rush specialist Lou Spanos.

Chris Kiffin, Lane’s younger brother, spent the past two years at Ole Miss, his second stint with the Rebels, and most recently coached linebackers, while Spanos, a former UCLA and UConn defensive coordinator, served as a senior defensive analyst.

Lucas spent the past four seasons at South Carolina working with defensive ends and outside linebackers and adding in 2025 the title of defensive run game coordinator. He is expected to work more with interior linemen in Baton Rouge with the Tigers retaining Peoples.

Joe Houston will serve as LSU’s new special teams coordinator after two seasons at Florida, including 2025 in that role.

Elijah Haven, a rare sophomore Outstanding Player selection in 2024, only surpassed that impressive performance with a record-breaking and championship-winning junior campaign.

The Dunham quarterback repeats as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 2A Offensive Outstanding Player, setting state single-season marks for passing touchdowns (62) and total touchdowns (73) and total touchdowns in a career (180).

Haven joins fellow Division III select state finalist Luke Miller of Calvary Baptist, and Mansfield coach Darrell Barbay, as this year’s Class 2A superlative award winners.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Haven was 240-for-331 (72.5%) with 3,929 yards and 62 touchdowns with just seven interceptions. He also rushed 127 times for another 847 yards and 11 scores.

His prolific effort helped lead his Tigers (13-1) to the program’s first title since 2004, defeating Calvary 34-17 in the Division III select state championship.

Miller led Calvary Baptist (12-2) to its second championship game in the past three years with his own standout performance in the middle of one of the state’s top defenses.

The 6-foot, 195-pound senior finished with 123 tackles, one of Louisiana’s top totals, including seven stops behind the line with three interceptions and 11 break ups.

Barbay led Mansfield (10-3) to its first 10-win season and first quarterfinal run since 1993 and an undefeated District 3-2A title. The Wolverines have improved their win total every season since Barbay’s hire in 2022, including three straight years with at least one playoff victory after a four-year drought.

Mansfield opened the season with a wild comeback from 35-0 deficit to beat Minden, 46-38, and rarely slowed down during a memorable run throughout the fall.

Tulane season, Jon Sumrall tenure ends in tough CFB Playoff trip to Ole Miss

Tulane’s second trip to Ole Miss this season didn’t prove much more successful than a long, disappointing afternoon in September.

The Green Wave (11-3) struggled out the gate Saturday and couldn’t keep up as the Rebels (12-1) blew open a 41-10 victory in the College Football Playoff first-round game that ended Jon Sumrall’s tenure in New Orleans and opened Pete Golding’s in Oxford, Miss.

“I told them it’s never OK to lose, so anybody that tells you it’s OK to lose, get away from them for the rest of your life,” Sumrall said of his postgame message to his players. “I don’t care if we’re talking about in football or in 40 years from now. Anybody that tell you, ‘hey, it’s OK you lost,’ no it’s not. It’s not OK we lost. I’m not OK with the loss. Never will be.

“I also told ’em that doesn’t change how I feel about ’em. I love this group. I love each guy on that team. This team will walk together forever as champions because we won a conference championship, aight? So while the outcome tonight sucks and I’m not happy with it and there’s nothing about it that I feel good about, I still feel good about this football team because we hoisted a conference championship trophy two weeks ago. And I told ’em that in 30 or 40 years they’ll bring them back for a celebration and I’ll probably need a cane to walk around with ’em, but I’m gonna celebrate. And I also told ’em that for the rest of my life if I can ever do anything for ’em, I’m a phone call away.”

Sumrall wraps up two seasons leading Tulane with a 20-8 record, including this year’s American Athletic Conference championship and Playoff appearance, as he heads to Florida.

Golding, a Hammond native, earned his first head-coaching victory in a debut on an unusually large stage as he succeeded Lane Kiffin, who left Nov. 30 to take over LSU.

“I was just excited for ’em to put everything behind ’em and get back on the grass and do what they love to do,” Golding told the TNT broadcast immediately following the game. “They created a great opportunity for themselves and came out and responded how I thought they would… They’re the same guys that we recruited. They’re tough, they’re competitive, they love football, they’re resilient, they’ve got grit. This is a group that enjoys playing together. So we knew we were playing for another opportunity. We don’t want it to end.”

Ole Miss built a 14-0 lead in a blink as quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, running back Kewan Lacy and company — with play-calling by new LSU offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. — moved down the field at will on the first two possessions.

Tulane meanwhile moved the ball early in its own right, but had drives stall in Rebels territory with an interception and dropped-pass turnover on downs before it could finally put a 39-yard Patrick Durkin field goal on the scoreboard early in the second quarter.

Ole Miss added a field goal later in the half to begin a run of 27 straight points that stretched the lead to 41-3 early in the fourth quarter.

The Green Wave compiled 421 yards to the Rebels’ 497 and were more efficient on third downs — 5-for-13 (38.5%) to 3-for-10 (30%) — but lost the turnover margin, 3-to-1, and struggled on third downs on both sides of the ball, going 0-for-4 and allowing Ole Miss 2-for-2.

Quarterback Jake Retzlaff finished 20-for-35 (57.1%) for 306 yards, an early interception and a late touchdown with former St. James star Shazz Preston leading the targets with five catches for 125 yards.

Sophomore running back Jamauri McClure rushed 15 times for 84 yards, and Retzlaff added 24 yards on 11 carries.

Tulane finally found the end zone with four minutes left in the game as Retzlaff found tight end Justyn Reid for a 29-yard gain up the left sideline.

But, by that time, the Rebels were well on their way to icing away the program’s first-ever Playoff win and a berth in national quarterfinals Jan. 1 against Georgia (12-1) in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

“It’s good when you’ve got good players,” Golding said of his first game as a head coach coming in those circumstances, adding with a smile: “So we”ll see what they’re chanting next time.”

Chambliss finished 23-for-29 (79.3%) for 282 yards and a passing touchdown and rushed six times for 36 yards and two scores.

Lacy led all players with 87 rushing yards and a score on 15 carries, and former Archbishop Rummel and LSU back Logan Diggs added 11 yards and a touchdown on four touches.

Safeties Kevin Adams III (Destrehan) and Bailey Despanie (Carencro) led the Tulane defense with either tackles each.

Five different Green Wave players combined for four sacks, and defensive lineman Kameron Hamilton (Zachary) and defensive back Jahiem “Joker” Johnson (Hammond) each broke up a pass.

Former General Trass star Wydett Williams Jr., a senior safety, was among the Rebels’ leaders with five tackles.

2025 LSWA Class 1A All-State Football Team

Hayneville’s produced state championships at such a prodigious rate it’s hard to believe the Golden Tornado ever experiencing a drought.

The school’s dynasty, which began under legendary coach Alton “Red” Franklin, ended an 11-year dry spell under his son David, who guided the Tornado to a perfect 14-0 season, which included a Division IV nonselect state championship.

Haynesville’s road began with the disappointment of consecutive state runner-up finishes, leading to this season’s show of perfection that earned Franklin the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 1A Coach of the Year honor.

Golden Tornado’s senior two-way standout Isaiah Washington, an LSU signee, is the state’s Defensive Player of the Year. First-year starter Trevin Simon of Ascension Catholic rewrote the state’s single-season records for yards and touchdown is the Offensive Player of the Year.

David Franklin won the fourth state title of his career under difficult circumstances. Not only did his father, the state’s fourth all-time leader in career wins (367), pass away in March, but he lost his beloved mother Beth in June.

Haynesville responded by outscoring opponents 687-146 with four shutouts and earned the No. 1 seed in the postseason.

The school’s 18th state championship, the first since 2014, was a test of will against second-seeded Mangham which led early in the fourth quarter.

Washington, the team’s quarterback who scored a pair of rushing touchdowns, showed his value to Haynesville once Mangham led 35-32 and were threatening for more. He came up with his fifth interception of the season with a 77-yard return with 9:52 remaining, providing the winning score, 39-35, with more than nine minutes to play.

Washington’s team-high 12 tackles in the final increased his season total to 61. Teammate Dakota Davis, a senior, was a repeat selection on the offensive line, and senior Eli Bray is the placekicker.

A year after Leesville’s Xavier Ford established new highs in rushing and touchdowns in a season Simon, a wide receiver in 2024, shattered those marks with 334 carries for 3,915 yards, 58 rushing touchdowns and 60 overall. His impact helped Ascension Catholic return to the Division IV select state championship game for the first in seven years.

Cajuns fall short of Delaware at wire in 68 Ventures Bowl

Louisiana (Lafayette) nearly completed a comeback Wednesday that would have served as a fittingly resilient punctuation to its season as a whole.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (6-7) held Delaware (7-6) scoreless on its final three possessions and scored 10 straight points to pull back within a possession, and a hobbled D’Wanye’ “Lunch” Winfield (Lutcher) led the offense 86 yards on a potential game-winning or -tying drive, its longest of the night, in the final minutes.

But the Blue Hens managed to survive Louisiana, 20-13, as a final throw into the end zone on a third-and-goal from the 7-yard line ricocheted incomplete as time expired in the 68 Ventures Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

“Since we were down 17, the whole sideline knew we’d been in this situation before,” Winfield told reporters at Hancock Whitney Stadium after the game. “Marshall game, everybody knew. Everybody had the same belief vision, same vision and the same goal that we were gonna win that game, and we were trying to will it to win.”

The three-score deficit deep into the third quarter proved just slightly too much for the Cajuns to overcome this time, though.

Winfield finished 21-for-36 (58.3%) for 231 yards, a touchdown and an interception and rushed 14 times for another 40 yards, as Louisiana narrowly edged Delaware in total yards, 335 to 334, and first downs, 20 to 16.

But a pair of missed opportunities early — a missed 39-yard field goal and an end-zone interception — and a minus-3 turnover margin kept the Cajuns behind the eight-ball.

And the Blue Hens managed to hold Louisiana to an inefficient 2.7-yard rushing average and 55.3% pass-completion rate as a team in that uphill battle.

“There’s a lot of things I wish I would’ve done better for ’em to score some points,” coach Michael Desormeaux said. “Could’ve done a better job on some of these play-calls when we got down there early on.”

Delaware took advantage of the slow start to strike first with a 61-yard Jo Silver breakaway late in the first quarter, trade second-quarter field goals and then stretch its lead to 20-3 in the third quarter.

Louisiana shut the Blue Hens out the final 21:59 and trimmed the deficit with a second Tony Sterner field goal, a 39-yarder, and then an 8-yard pass from Winfield to sophomore receiver Shelton Sampson Jr. (Catholic-Baton Rouge) midway through the fourth.

“We just knew we couldn’t give up anything else,” said senior defensive lineman Jordan Lawson, who wrapped up five tackles and blocked a field goal. “We were at a point in the game where we knew we had to make a push, and it was gonna start by us making a stop and giving it back to the offense so they could go and score. So once we got to that point in the game, I think everybody just had it on their mind that they couldn’t get anything else.”

But the Cajuns’ rally would ultimately run out of time.

Sophomore tight end Caden Jensen, the target on the final end-zone throw, caught four passes for 72 yards, and Sampson had three receptions for 42 yards and the team’s lone touchdown.

Senior linebacker Jaden Dugger led the defense with seven tackles, including two for loss and a sack, and junior defensive back Maurion Eleam (Neville) had six tackles and a pass breakup.

Louisiana overcame an injury-plagued season and a 2-6 start to win four straight games and earn a bowl game for an eighth straight year, extending the program-best streak.

But the Cajuns fell short for the fourth straight postseason after having won their previous three (2019-21)

A memorable Prep Classic event in Caesars Superdome closed the book on Louisiana’s 2025 high school football season.

Edna Karr, Ouachita Parish, St. Charles Catholic, Iowa, Dunham, Sterlington, Riverside Academy and Haynesville brought titles home to every area code and corner of the state.

And from dominant repeat runs to thrilling and even chaotic runs, each of eight championship games during the three-day event provided a wealth of storylines and exceptional performances.

Jerit Roser of Louisiana vs. All Y’all and Spencer Verret of the LHSAA Network reconvened Tuesday to reflect on the slate of finales, including the biggest takeaways overall and some great finishes and standouts.

Louisiana’s 2025 high school football season ended with a bang — or several — during the three-day, eight-game Prep Classic state-championship event in Caesars Superdome.

A wide range of impressive performances and memorable storylines highlighted titles claimed by teams from all over The Boot from first-time winner Iowa, to Ouachita Parish ending three-decade drought, to Sterlington repeating for the first time in program history, to Edna Karr continuing its dominant run with a 27th straight win, and everywhere in between.

Edna Karr cruises past St. Augustine to title repeat, 27th straight win

Edna Karr finally broke through in the second quarter Saturday and then spent the second half turning a highly anticipated Division-I Select into a domination and coronation.

The No. 1 Cougars (14-0) combined five takeaways and a dominant rushing performance to blow open a 49-14 defeat of No. 3 St. Augustine (12-2) for a 27th straight victory and second straight state championship.

Ouachita Parish stuns Ruston, 21-20, with late score, takeaway

Ouachita Parish completed its revenge tour right into the history books Saturday in dramatic fashion.

The No. 14 Lions (11-4) shook off a slow start and lingering deficit in the Division-I Non-Select title game the same way they had four straight district losses and battled back to stun No. 1 Ruston (11-3) with highlight-reel plays on both sides of the ball late to snatch the 21-20 victory and their first state championship since 1989.

“The game tonight is really representative, especially in the second half, of our football season this year,” coach Benjy Lewis said. “I think there was a time that most people in the state and definitely the people in our area would’ve counted us out and said that we were gonna be a one-and-done, and these guys thought different. This group of guys is one of the most resilient groups I’ve been around.”

Ruston had scored on its first possession of the afternoon and held its lead well into the fourth quarter after swarming a Ouachita Parish fourth down early in the period to maintain its 20-14 advantage.

But the Lions forced a quick punt right back, and three plays later Montrell Conner Jr. rolled out away from pressure and heaved a 30-yard shot into the end zone where fellow senior Wydell Clark Jr. cut between and leaped over a pair of defenders for a game-tying circus catch that set up the go-ahead extra-point by Kameron Gayle.

“I didn’t have a deep route. I had a stop route,” Clark said. “But ‘Trell was scrambling. I knew I could take the DB, so I pointed up to tell him to throw it up. And when I caught it, I was wondering why everybody wasn’t trying to tackle me and I heard everybody was cheering, so I was guessing I scored.”

The Bearcats appeared to have a potential answer brewing, particularly with a long fourth-down conversion eight plays later well into Ouachita territory.

Junior wide receiver Josiah Morgan took a reverse, stopped and find junior tight end Ahmad Hudson, who split two defenders, through off a third and went winding 43 yards into the red zone.

But Clark, one of the first Lions eluded near midfield, hustled all the way back to chase down the play and strip loose the fumble which fellow senior defensive back Dylan Johnson pounced upon for the recovery.

“I don’t know where I came from, but I saw him, once he caught the ball, he was making moves and he kept swinging the ball every move,” Clark said. “Every move, he was yanking the ball away from his body, so I was like, ‘I know I can catch him, but what am I gonna do when I catch him?’ And when I caught him, I just reached for the ball and then I saw my teammate fall on the ball.”

Ruston coach Jerrod Baugh and staff worked to regroup the players from the emotional moment to force a punt and earn another chance with 46 seconds remaining.

But Ouachita punter Trey Johnson boomed a 60-yard into the end zone, and the Bearcats only had enough time to set up a 52-yard field-goal attempt that came up well short.

“I’m very proud of this football team — as always,” Baugh said. “Win or lose, the football game doesn’t decide who you are as a person or how good of a football team we are. These kids, they battled all the way to the end of the ball game, and that’s what they’ve done all year. We just happened to win more than we lost, and this one hurts worse because it was the last one.”

Divine intervention: St. Charles Catholic stuns Archbishop Shaw for title in chaotic finish

A surreal final 35 seconds Friday of penalties, timeouts and championship celebrations that were and then weren’t left onlookers at losses for how to put the chaos into worthy words.

For coach Wayne Stein and his players, the explanation of St. Charles Catholic’s wild, 23-21 comeback to stun reigning champion Archbishop Shaw for the Division-II Select title was clear: divine intervention.

The No. 1 Comets (13-1) said their late special teams and strength coach John Talley, who passed away at the end of last season, had a clear hand in the final steps of their climb back to the mountain top for the first time since 2022 right to the game-winning 44-yard field goal drilled by senior kicker Tyler Milioto with five seconds remaining.

“After our kids honored him, we started to go to work, and we said that we were going to dedicate the season to coach Talley,” Stein said. “We were very careful that that didn’t mean it was going to be a championship. We knew the type of schedule we had and knew the division we were in. We wanted to honor him in the way the way that we prepared every day and competed and played with toughness, because he was a tough sucker.

“And just things have happened to us lately. Last week, we beat U-High, we blocked an extra-point to get to overtime. I don’t know if you believe in those things, but it was John Talley’s 62nd birthday last Friday. And somehow his intervention was there again tonight. I can not say enough, though, about my kids.”

The largely new-look No. 7 Eagles (9-5) after graduating 17 of last season’s starters appeared to be authoring their own storybook season.

Archbishop Shaw built a 21-14 lead on a pair of third-quarter touchdown runs by junior quarterback Allen “Red” Shaw III, a converted defensive back, and more than 24 straight minutes of shutout defense.

After three punts and an interception to start the second half, St. Charles Catholic pieced together an 11-play, 82-yard drive — its best of the game — for a hard-fought Skyler Edwards touchdown on the goal line with 35 seconds remaining.

But the typically reliable Milioto’s extra-point kick shanked wide left and appeared to leave the Comets’ rally a point shy.

“They did drive 80 yards to cut the lead to one,” Archbishop Shaw coach Hank Tierney said. “And then having really great special teams like they do, it’s very unusual for them to miss the extra point, and they did. And actually when that happened, the game was over. We should’ve won the game.

“But I’ve been a head coach for 40-plus years, and I’ve seen a lot of crazy endings to games and have lost games tough a lot of times, but this was absolutely the toughest loss I’ve ever taken as a coach. I have had my share of good times and bad times, but I really feel bad for these young men because they worked so hard.”

The Eagles recovered the ensuing onside kick attempt and prepared to run out the clock with St. Charles Catholic down to two timeouts.

Stein hesitated momentarily deciding whether to call timeout, and an Archbishop Shaw player removed his helmet to begin celebrating his team’s apparent repeat championship.

“I wasn’t sure if I was just gonna shake hands after the first kneel-down,” Stein said. “That’s why, if you noticed, it took me four seconds to call timeout. Luckily, divine intervention: helmet comes off, and I called the timeout after that. That’s how I was awarded my timeout back. So I guess it’s a whole lot of divine intervention going on between that and coaching decisions as well.”

The penalty stopped the clock after first down and preserved the Comets’ timeouts for second and third to force a punt with 20 seconds remaining.

Milioto’s kicking net on the sideline had already been taken down and his tees was lost by the time St. Charles Catholic coaches realized he needed to begin preparing for a potential shot at redemption.

“I’m looking everywhere, and I can’t find (the tees), and I realize someone picked ’em up because they thought the game was over, so I go back and get the tee out,” he said. “And they’re trying to put the net back together, but it’s not easy to put together. It’s a lot of pieces. So then they just picked up the net and were holding it, and while I was kicking it, I was hitting somebody. Somebody was holding it from the middle, and every time I would kick it, I was kicking ’em right in the back.”

Archbishop Shaw’s punt shot quickly out of bounds left for just 8 yards and set St. Charles Catholic up at the 32-yard line with 17 seconds now on the clock.

Junior quarterback Landree LeBlanc hit senior receiver Ethan Gros on a quick out to the right side to set up a 44-yard game-winning opportunity for Milioto.

And confusion only further mounted as officials mistakenly flagged Tierney for calling a timeout before the kick.

“They dropped a flag at the end. We had a timeout. They picked it up, and they didn’t move it 5 yards,” he explained. “That was a big ol’ controversy, ‘Oh, we told you you didn’t have a timeout.’ We had a timeout. I’m not very smart, but I can count to three.”

Milioto stepped up and drove the ball through the uprights this time for his team’s first lead since early in the half.

And the Comets closed out the win with a kickoff and one last defensive stop.

“I just think it had to be God,” Milioto said. “I mean, I’ve never seen that. The game was over. They just had to kneel the game out, someone takes their helmet off, now we get another chance, and then they shank the punt, and now we’ve still gotta make the field goal. And I felt like it was kinda going out, and then it just curled back in and went down the middle.”
