Three Louisiana colleges’ football seasons have already ended, and more will Saturday, while a few others jockey for playoff and bowl positioning.

Southeastern Louisiana will kick off the state’s Thanksgiving weekend slate with a noon kickoff Saturday to its FCS home playoff matchup against Illinois State.

And the annual Bayou Classic between in-state SWAC rivals Grambling State and Southern provides another SWAC headliner.

Louisiana (Lafayette) needs one more win to secure bowl eligibility, and ULM will visit its in-state Sun Belt rival with hops of playing spoiler.

Louisiana Tech and LSU will try to finish the regular season on positive notes and improve their respective standings in the bowl pecking order.

And Tulane will provide a night-cap in which victory is critical to maintain the Green Wave’s ongoing pursuits of an American Athletic Conference championship and a College Football Playoff berth.

Ten of Louisiana’s 11 Division-I football programs will be active Saturday, including four at home for the final time this season.

ULM, Nicholls State, McNeese State and Southern will all play their final home games of the season, while LSU will host its final SEC home game.

LSU and Louisiana Tech are still working to secure bowl eligibility, and ULM is backed against a wall to keep those slimming hopes alive.

College football season is now racing towards its finish, and the stakes all over the state are clear.

From district-winning and playoff-earning high school standouts to NFL performances that helped the New Orleans Saints earn a rare win or marked a career day for a former LSU star.

This past weekend featured memorable efforts at every level to headline Louisiana vs. All Y’all’s latest round of Players of the Week.

Congratulations to this week’s winners.

HIGH SCHOOL

Offense — Jordin Griffin (2027), Barbe RB: The junior running back rolled his way to 289 yards and six rushing touchdowns on 20 carries Friday to help lead his Buccaneers past Sam Houston, 70-49, and into a Division-I Non-Select playoff spot. Griffin averaged nearly 15 yards per touch with most of his touchdowns coming in explosive fashion, four of 30-plus yards. The win against the Broncos was the traditional power’s first since 2021.

Defense — Darren Coates Jr. (2028), St. Augustine EDGE: The sophomore has become a consistent disrupter for the Purple Knights’ defense and came away with two big takeaways to highlight his Week 10 performance and help the team blow open an emphatic 55-28 defeat of John Curtis in a battle for second place in the Catholic League. Coates intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown in the third quarter, then added a fumble recovery as St. Augustine continued to dominate the second half.

Special Teams — Dalen Powell (2028), Ruston RB: The Bearcats’ sophomore running back has been one of Louisiana’s all-around breakout stars of this fall, and Friday marked his greatest performance yet. Powell racked up 253 all-purple yards and four scores, including 84-yard punt and 99-yard kick returns for touchdowns, in a 49-44 win against West Monroe to clinch the title in a wild District 2-5A race and the No. 1 seed in the Division-I Non-Select bracket.

COLLEGE

Offense — Jake Retzlaff, Tulane QB: The Green Wave enjoyed one hell of a shake-back victory on the road at ranked Memphis to remain in the hunt in the American Athletic Conference — and, albeit with a razor-narrow path, also the College Football Playoff picture. And their veteran quarterback was a star in that equation with one of the nation’s highest-graded passing performance for his 332 yards and three touchdowns on 16-for-23 (69.6%) efficiency, while also rushing 10 times for 43 yards and another score.

Defense — Marcellius Johnson, Grambling State LB: The Tigers’ junior linebacker earned SWAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time with his productive and disruptive effort in a 31-23 defeat of Bethune-Cookman. Johnson racked up nine tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to help highlight Grambling State’s win to remain just a game back of Prairie View A&M in the SWAC West.

Special Teams — Pierson Parent, McNeese State LS: The former Dutchtown standout provided a big-swing special-teams play in addition to his long-snapping duties in his Cowboys’ 35-20 defeat of East Texas A&M. With the score tied at 7-7 late in the first quarter, Parent was able to pounce on a muffed punt to set up McNeese State’s offense with a short field for a go-ahead score to help start building a lead.

PROFESSIONAL

Offense — Tyler Shough, New Orleans Saints QB: The rookie quarterback had a solid afternoon overall, highlighted by some big plays, in his second career start to help lead his team to its second victory of the season. Shough completed 19 of his 27 passes for 282 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions to beat NFC South rival Carolina, 17-7.

Defense — Danielle Hunter, Houston Texans DE: The former LSU star earns his second-straight LVAY professional DPOW honors and fourth of the season with his most disruptive performance yet in his Texans’ 36-29 comeback win against Jacksonville. Hunter finished with seven tackles, including four for loss and a career-high 3.5 sacks, and a forced fumble.

Special Teams — Nathan Shepherd, New Orleans Saints DT: The veteran defensive tackle was among the league’s top-graded special teams players this weekend, highlighted by a blocked field goal in the Saints’ defeat o the Panthers. He also finished the game with two tackles and a sack.

The Week 11 college football schedule is loaded with pivotal matchups for Louisiana’s Division-I programs.

Interim coach Frank Wilson III will lead LSU into No. 4 Alabama looking to turn renewed energy around the program into a potential November turnaround from an October skid that ultimately end Brian Kelly’s tenure in Baton Rouge.

Tulane will similarly try to rebound from a disappointing Week 10 loss with a Friday night road game at Memphis with major American Athletic Conference and College Football Playoff implications.

And Louisiana Tech and Louisiana (Lafayette) will meanwhile look to carry some Halloween weekend momentum forward and, in the Bulldogs’ case, secure bowl-eligibility and, in the Ragin’ Cajuns’ case, keep alive their outside hopes to still earn a postseason bid with a strong November.

Most notably on the FCS side, Southeastern Louisiana will visit Lamar for a pivotal Southland Conference tilt atop the league standings.

Nicholls State and Grambling State will meanwhile try to keep in the Southland and SWAC mixes, respectively.

Ten of the state’s Division-I programs will be active this weekend with only ULM on a bye week.

Louisiana’s high school football playoffs are on the immediate horizon, and the college season is into its stretch run.

The 10th week of college action and ninth of high school and NFL closed the door on October and kicked off November. And as the stakes rise and room for error shrinks, standouts at every level are rising to the occasion with impressive, winning performances.

As always, Louisiana vs. All Y’all identified nine of the best efforts from all three phases and all three levels.

Congratulations to the latest Player of the Week winners.

HIGH SCHOOL

Offense — Jake Randle (2026), Isidore Newman ATH: The future Tulane running back has been called on this season take the reins of Newman’s offense as a first-time quarterback, a role in which he’s appeared to come into his own over the past two months. In one of the Greenies’ bigger games of the season thus far, Randle completed 12 of his 18 passes (66.7%) for 307 yards and four touchdowns and ran 18 times for another 132 yards and two scores to lead a big 42-14 defeat of Country Day.

Defense — Letravious Williams (2027), Alexandria S: The Trojans’ junior safety has been a key difference-maker week in and week out this season for one of the top Class 5A and Division-I Select teams in the state. While Tray’s eye-catching consistency blocking punts has probably snatched his biggest headlines, he had arguably his best defensive performance of the season Friday with 20 tackles and a late interception to set up the game-winning touchdown in a 28-21 defeat of Ouachita Parish.

Special Teams — Collin DiBetta (2027), Acadiana: The versatile star did a bit of everything to help highlight his Wreckin’ Rams’ 49-21 roll past Sam Houston for a sixth straight victory. DiBetta returned a kick for a touchdown to go with a passing touchdown and receiving touchdown on offense and a pair of interceptions on defense. DiBetta taking over more of the quarterback duties in late September has been a critical piece of Acadiana’s shakeback from an 0-3 start to the season, and Friday was a prime example of the type of game-changer he can be anywhere on the field the team plays him.

COLLEGE

Offense — D’Wanye’ “Lunch” Winfield, Louisiana QB: The former Lutcher star completed 14 of his 15 pass attempts — a program-record 93.3% — for 232 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing 15 times for another 45 yards and a score. The performance helped lead the Ragin’ Cajuns to a big lead and much-needed win at South Alabama to keep the door cracked open for potential bowl elegibility if they can finish the season on a positive run.

Defense — Jacob Fields, Louisiana Tech LB: Fields led his Bulldogs’ emphatic homecoming defeat of Sam Houston with his seven tackles and 85-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to help Louisiana Tech effectively put the game away and shut down any remaining Bearkats momentum or hope after a couple third-quarter scores.

Special Teams — Delano Franklin, Grambling State DB/RET: Grambling State hadn’t been able to reach the end zone or scratch together much offense at all with its top two quarterbacks sidelined by injuries. But the Tigers’ defense and a pair of field goals helped keep the team within 10-6 of Alabama A&M late, and Franklin popped a 64-yard punt return for a touchdown that would swing that deficit into a 13-10 victory.

PROFESSIONAL

Offense — Damien Lewis, Carolina Panthers OL: The former national-championship LSU guard was one of the league’s top-graded run-blockers this weekend to help the Panthers claim a 16-13 road upset of the Green Bay Packers. Carolina out-rushed its hosts in terms of both total yards and yards-per-carry and allowed just one sack, and Lewis was also not charged with any penalties or any pressures.

Defense — Danielle Hunter, Houston Texans DE: The former LSU edge rusher finished with three tackles, two hits on the quarterback, four more hurries and a deflected pass in the Texans’ battle with the Denver Broncos. Although Houston ultimately fell, 18-15, Hunter was one of the top-graded defenders for a unit that held Denver under 20 points for just the second time this season.

Special Teams — Kavontae Turpin, Dallas Cowboys WR/RET: One of Louisiana vs. All Y’all’s most consistent award-winners adds another Special Teams selection to his résumé. The former Neville star returned six kickoffs for 151 yards, an average of 25.2 yards per opportunity and added a few more yards on a punt return, two catches and a rush.

Cajuns, Grambling, Southland wins highlight Nov. 1 results

Halloween weekend marked Louisiana’s college football programs recorded their first winning weekend in a few weeks, though the results were still a largely mixed bag.

Louisiana (Lafayette), Grambling State, Southeastern Louisiana, Nicholls State and McNeese State won Saturday to join Louisiana Tech’s homecoming win Friday, while ULM, Southern and Northwestern State followed Tulane in the loss column.

LSU was the lone idle team, enjoying its annual bye prior to facing Alabama.

CAJUNS EARN MUCH-NEEDED WINS

The Ragin’ Cajuns (3-6, 2-3) scored a pair of touchdowns in the final 2:10 of the first half at South Alabama (2-7, 1-4), then another to open the second half to take control on their way to a much-needed win, 31-22.

Former Lutcher star D’Wanye’ “Lunch” Winfield completed 14 of his 15 passes (93.3%) for 232 yards and two touchdowns — a program record for completion percentage — while rushing 15 times for 45 yards and another score.

And former Catholic-Baton Rouge star Shelton Sampson Jr., an LSU transfer caught six passes for a career-high 138 yards and two touchdowns.

The dynamic running back duo of Zylan Perry (Franklin) and Elijah “Bill” Davis (Riverside Academy) each finished with 56 yards, with Perry also finding the end zone.

Senior linebacker Jaden Dugger led the defense with 11 tackles, including one for loss, and an interception.  Senior safety Tyree Skipper (Sophie B. Wright) and senior linebacker Terrence Williams (Many) added nine each, including a sack by Skipper.

GRAMBLING TOPS ALABAMA A&M LATE

Grambling State started Saturday without star quarterback C’Zavian “Zae” Teasett (Scotlandville) following a scary hit the previous week and had backup Amyne Darensbourg (John F. Kennedy) sidelined by an injury in the first quarter.

But the Tigers’ defense responded and, after a pair of early Alabama A&M scores, dominated the rest of the day, including three-plus shutout quarters, until a 64-yard Delano Franklin punt return could lift the home team to victory, 13-10.

Grambling State recorded a season-high eight sacks and three takeaways and held the Bulldogs to just 175 yards of total offense and 0-for-11 on third downs.

Senior defensive lineman Bryce Cage (Scotlandville) and sophomore linebacker Jamal Jordan (Evangel Christian) each finished with six tackles and a sack.

Graduate defensive ends Shanye Monsanto and Jon Horton (Scotlandville) each recorded 1.5 sacks to lead the balanced and disruptive effort up front, senior defensive back Blake Davis and junior defensive back Jalen Guillard (East Jefferson) each snatched interceptions and freshman defensive back Jay’shaun Johnson (Franklin) recovered a fumble.

Grambling State’s offensive numbers were limited in their own right with just 143 yards, but the Tigers also did a better job limiting their mistakes to a lone turnover and fewer penalties.

Former Loreauville standout Hayden Benoit stepped into the quarterback role and finished 9-for-13 (69.2%) for 91 yards in his first significant action as a true freshman.

SOUTHEASTERN, NICHOLLS, MCNEESE NOTCH SLC WINS

Southeastern Louisiana, Nicholls State and McNeese State all won their respective Southland Conference games in blowout fashion.

The Lions beat East Texas A&M, 59-14. The Colonels knocked off Houston Christian, 31-7. And the Cowboys took care of in-state foe Northwestern State, 50-3.

Southeastern Louisiana unloaded its season-best scoring output in the victory, which also moved the Lions into position as the state’s winningest team thus far this season.

The quarterback duo of Carson Camp and Kyle Lowe finished a combined 20-for-29 (60.0%) for 311 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Former Comeaux standout Jaylon Domingeaux caught four passes for a career-high 157 yards and two touchdowns, and former East St. John star D’Khai Joseph caught two passes for 55 yards and his first college receiving touchdown and also recorded his season punt-return touchdown.

Kyree Paul (Istrouma) and Calvin Smith Jr. (Hahnville) each rushed for 38 yards and at least one touchdown, with Smith finding the end zone twice, and Deantre Jackson (Edna Karr) added 16 yards and a score.

Linebacker K.K. Reno (Catholic-New Iberia) finished with 10 tackles, and veteran defensive back Ian Conerly-Goodly (Covington) snatched an interception.

A career day for sophomore quarterback Ean Rodrigue (Thibodaux) helped lead Nicholls State’s win as the Colonels knocked off Houston Christian, 31-7.

Rodrigue finished 17-for-22 for 174 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 89 yards and another score.

Dany’e Brooks (Edna Karr), Everett Hunter and Paxton Lafont (E.D. White) all caught touchdown passes — Lafont’s coming from running back Shane Lee (Destrehan).

McNeese State’s victory cruise was also led by its quarterback’s efficient and dual-threat efforts.

Jake Strong completed 11 of 17 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown pass and rushed for a team-high 94 yards and a score.

Senior running back Coleby Hamm‘s two touchdowns led the Cowboys’ five different rushers to find the end zone, including former Lake Charles College Prep star Tre’Vonte Citizen who finished with 63 yards on just six carries.

LSU is on a bye — and amid a coaching change — but Louisiana’s college football schedule has games slated for three consecutive days to turn the calendar from October to November.

Tulane and Louisiana Tech will kick off the state’s Week 10 slate with notable games Thursday and Friday: the Green Wave’s trip to UTSA where the Roadrunners can be pesky in the Alamodome, and then the Bulldogs’ Halloween date with Sam Houston for their 100th homecoming in program history.

The Sun Belt, Southland and SWAC carry the Saturday schedule with big conference games all around.

Week 9 of the NCAA college football season was another rough one, as anticipated.

And LSU’s loss to Texas A&M proved ugly and embarrassing enough as to become an ignominious end to Brian Kelly’s tenure in Baton Rouge.

The coach’s firing, the analysis of how the situation spiraled to this point and the potential candidates to take over the Tigers’ programs are not only the biggest story in local sports, but among the biggest on a national scale.

Louisiana vs. All Y’all’s “PODnas,” Jerit Roser and Daniel Hawkes, react deep-dive into the the whole saga as LSU moves on from Kelly (and offensive coordinator Joe Sloan) to interim coach Frank Wilson III and a national search to determine the permanent replacement with some high-profile candidates already being tied to the vacancy.

Jerit and Daniel quickly look back through some of the on-field results as well — mostly the Tigers’ 49-25 loss to the Aggies and keeping Grambling State quarterback C’Zavian “Zae” Teasett (Scotlandville) in our minds and hearts as he recovers from an injury that knocked him out late in a win vs. Jackson State.

And, always, the guys look at four candidates for the “PODnas” High School Play of the Week.

Louisiana’s Division-I college football programs suffered

Grambling State, Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana provided the bright spots on a 3-7 week overall on which a 49-25 LSU loss to Texas A&M headlined a tough Saturday overall.

GSU ESCAPES JSU IN VEGAS DESPITE TEASETT INJURY

Grambling State quarterback C’Zavian “Zae” Teasett was knocked out the game Saturday following a hard hit on a third-down run that helped set up a game-winning field goal.

Freshman Amyne Darensbourg (John F. Kennedy) carried the torch with two more first downs before Josh McCormick‘s 44-yard kick downed Jackson State, 25-24, in Las Vegas.

But the scary moment and continued concern for Teasett, the former Scotlandville star, significantly dampened the day.

“When you lose him to injury like this, it hurts you,” coach Mickey Joseph told reporters, according to The Clarion-Ledger (Jackson, Miss.). “It’s a bittersweet win. We would trade it for a healthy (Teasett).”

Teasett finished 16-for-26 (61.5%) for 232 yards and two touchdowns and rushed eight times for 15 yards and another score to help lead his Tigers back from a 10-0 deficit with 23 unanswered points.

Senior tight end Covadis Knighten, another former Scotlandville standout, caught five passes for 96 yards and 59-yard score, and sophomore Andrew Frazier (Pineville) had a 26-yard touchdown catch.

Senior cornerback Blake Davis and junior safety Cisco Caston finished with nine and eight tackles, respectively, and graduate defensive end Warren Robinson‘s 1.5 sacks led a two-sack and four-TFL day.

NICHOLLS TOPS MCNEESE IN IN-STATE BATTLE

Nicholls State (2-6, 2-2) finally ended its five-game skid on the season with a 31-7 defeat of McNeese State (2-6, 1-3) to extend its streak against its in-state Southland Conference rival to five wins.

The Colonels jumped on the Cowboys early with 10 points in the first quarter and then shut them out after halftime to pull away for their biggest win in the series since 1986.

Former Thibodaux standout Ean Rodrigue, earning his first start for an injured Deuce Hogan, completed 12 of his 20 passes (60.0%) for 161 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown to Karaaz Johnson (St. Augustine), and rushed 12 times for 77 yards and another score.

Sophomore running back Miequle Brock Jr. led the rushing attack with 104 yards on 17 carries, and Johnson’s two catches for 74 yards topped the receivers.

Junior linebacker Jake Dalmado, the former Archbishop Hannan star, led the defense with 10 tackles, and senior defensive backs Ty Marsh and Laurence Sullivan Jr. each intercepted passes.

SOUTHEASTERN REMAINS ATOP SOUTHLAND HUNT

Southeastern Louisiana (6-2, 4-0) rolled its way past Houston Christian (2-6, 1-3) for a 38-14 victory, its fourth straight to open Southland Conference play.

The Lions remain tied atop the league standings with Lamar (7-1, 4-0) and Stephen F. Austin (6-2, 4-0).

Coach Frank Scelfo’s squad traded early scores with the Huskies for a 14-7 lead at the break, but before dominating the second half, 24-7.

Quarterback Carson Camp finished 12-for-15 for 169 yards, a touchdown — a 14-yard throw to tight end Cade Collier — and two interceptions.

Former Louisiana high school standouts once again led Southeastern Louisiana’s rushing and receiving efforts with Deantre Jackson (Edna Karr) carrying 13 times for 64 yards and a score, Calvin “C.J.” Smith Jr. carrying nine times for 45 yards and two touchdowns and Jaylon Domingeaux (Comeaux) catches three passes for 87 yards.

Senior linebacker K.K. Reno (Catholic-New Iberia) led the defense with 10 tackles, including 1.5 for loss and 0.5 sacks, and a forced fumble.

And senior wide receiver Brandon Hayes returned three kicks for 155 yards, including an 85-yard touchdown.

A rainy Tiger Stadium stage is set for one of the nation’s top matchups of the NCAA’s Week 9 slate.

No. 20 LSU (5-2, 2-2) badly needs a bounce-back win not only to keep its slimming College Football Playoff hopes on life support, but to revive the spiraling vibes from around a fan base intensely turning (further) on coach Brian Kelly.

But, standing in the way: An undefeated No. 3 Texas A&M (7-0, 4-0) that would love nothing more than to drive a further stake into the Tigers’ season, but is still searching for its first win in Baton Rouge since joining the SEC more than a decade ago.

The storyline-loaded showdown is the focal point of Louisiana’s Saturday night — and of a week in which Louisiana vs. All Y’all’s “PODnas” are (or at least one of them is) having a tough time remaining confident.

Jerit Roser and Daniel Hawkes preview the Tigers-Aggies matchup, among other notable games around the state and country, in the latest episode of the show.

The guys also share some immediate takeaways from the New Orleans Pelicans’ season-opener and announce the latest winner of the Top High School Play of the Week honors: Madison Prep state Landon “Manu” Johnson for his nonchalant, one-handed catch in the end zone.
