The face of LSU’s football franchise this time last year learned Saturday — finally — with which franchise he’ll begin his professional career.
Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft with the No. 249 overall pick.
The Lake Charles native, who prepped in Texas before signing with what he considered his home-state Tigers, became one of the major talking points of the weekend’s television coverage as his slide surprised commentators.
“It’s hard to put your finger on what it is when those around the Nussmeier camp, even today, a little bit taken aback and bewildered as how this is unfolding, seeing if he’s going to be taken at this point, which is a question you have to ask,” ESPN host Rece Davis said during the wait.
But the 6-foot-2, 203-pound passer’s early projections last year as a potential high first-round draftee and his highly anticipated final college season were swiftly derailed by injuries throughout this fall, and most of the conversation during his pre-draft process centered on his recovery.
“There’s something going on here,” said Louis Riddick, the former NFL safety, scout and front-office personnel executive. “This young mane should not still be sitting on the board being undrafted at this point. There’s obviously some information that is making teams very uncomfortable.”
Kansas City ultimately made the move to add him to its draft class late where he will join teammate Mansoor Delane, the cornerback the Chiefs selected in Thursday’s first round, and have the opportunity to learn behind superstar and Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes Jr.
Nussmeier spent a patient five years in purple and gold waiting three seasons to start the past two and wrapped his career with 7,699 yards on 660-for-1032 (64.0%) passing with 52 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.
“I’m sure this moment didn’t unfold the way he envisioned, but now he has the moment of celebration with his family and friends, and Garrett Nussmeier is going to Kansas City,” Davis said. “Look, this guy in 2024, threw for more than 4,000 yards. Only Joe Burrow’s thrown for more yards in a single season at LSU than Garrett Nussmeier did. An emotional time, and Garrett’s gonna have an opportunity to earn his way, and he’s found himself in a really good situation, I would think, joining the Kansas City Chiefs.”
He became the seventh LSU selection in this year’s event.
The Kansas City Chiefs traded up Thursday to take Delane at No. 6 overall, and the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears chose safety A.J. Haulcy and wide receiver Zavion Thomas, respectively, in Friday’s third round.
Another pair of Nussmeier’s targets in tight end Bauer Sharp and wide receiver Barion Brown went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints, respectively, in the sixth Saturday.
The Atlanta Falcons drafted linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. later that round at No. 215 overall and will reunite him with former teammate Maason Smith, whom the franchise acquired last week in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
And Nussmeier finally got his moment before the draft came to its close.
