Welcome for the first time in “Recruit Dat Boot” history an illustrious guest.
St. Augustine coach Robert Valdez was so kind as to join hosts Jerit Roser and Sam Spiegelman on this week’s episode ahead of a highly anticipated Week 5 matchup against Edna Karr.
Whether one wants to call the Catholic League battle a “showdown” or not, two undefeated and hyper-talented teams both ranked in the top four of the latest LSWA’s Class 5A polls will battle Friday on the West Bank.
Valdez shared his perspective on the matchup, including the challenges of facing a loaded and well-coached Cougars squad headlined by LSU commits Richard Anderson and Aiden Hall and Texas commit Hayward Howard Jr.
He shared his philosophies in program-building — which have proven successful in several stops — and what has made him most proud of the team-first approach his own young stars, including 2027 wide receivers Miguel Whitley and Ray’Quan Williams, have taken in his first year and a half at the helm.
And he also provided some thoughts on navigating the every-changing landscapes of college and high school athletics and recruiting and his excitement to be coaching preps back in hometown New Orleans after a college stint at Grambling State as the NIL and transfer portal era began to take shape.
Jerit and Sam also took a few minute to react to LSU’s newest in-state offer — Franklin Parish junior Trey Martin — and the outlook for the Tigers’ 2027 class, particularly the running back board under associate head coach Frank Wilson III.
