Riverside Academy retook the field after halftime Thursday already with a lead, then went promptly for the jugular.
The No. 2 Rebels (12-1) hit a pair of big passing touchdowns on their first two possessions of the second half, two four-play scoring drives, to blow open a big lead and hold off No. 5 Ascension Catholic (11-3) for their first title since 2016.
Coach Lee Roussel and company were back in Caesars Superdome for the second time in three years and able this time to complete their mission for the second championship in program history.
Eagles record breaking running back, Trevin Simon dashed for 41-yards and scored first on the opening possession.
Riverside answered with a pair of Jayden Obiewke touchdowns- the first, a 46-yard pass from Christopher Becknel and then a 2-yard run to give the Rebel’s a 14-7 lead at the break.
Riverside continued to build their lead through the third quarter with the arm of senior signal caller Brock Bourgeois, connecting on deep scoring strikes to Becknel and Kenric Johnson for 42 yards.
“We knew we had to stay in it, so I tried to stay poised and keep everybody positive,” Bourgeois said on the success through the air. “Our line and receivers were incredible all night, and their success made mine possible.”
The Eagles were able to get a comeback bid started by piecing together an 81-yard drive capped by a Josh Barber 1-yard scoring run.
After a Rebel drive stalled out, Ascension Catholic once again mounted another long drive, this time traveling 88 yards before Eagle quarterback Gregory Fernandez dashed in from 3 yards out and pulled his squad within one score, 21-28.
Riverside iced it away with a William Rauch field goal, drilling one from 40 yards.
