LSU in AP, Coaches polls: Tigers leap with big win amid chaotic week

LSU and its next two opponents each climbs the major national rankings Sunday after notable headline wins amid another chaotic weekend nationally.

The Tigers (6-2, 3-2) moved up three spots in the latest AP poll and four spots in the Coaches to No. 15 and No. 13, respectively, after a dominant, 38-17 showing at Auburn (4-3, 2-3).

Coach Lane Kiffin and company will enjoy a bye in the final weekend of October before hosting Alabama (6-2, 4-2) on Nov. 7 and Texas (5-2, 2-2) on Nov. 14.

The Crimson Tide and Longhorns both rebounded Saturday from back-to-back losses the previous two weeks to move back up in the polls.

Alabama climbed three spots in each to No. 10 after its 31-20 defeat of Texas A&M (4-4, 1-4), and Texas went up eight in the AP and seven in the Coaches to No. 11 on both lists after holding onto a 34-27 upset of Ole Miss (5-2, 3-2), which slipped to No. 12.

The Rebels were one of three top-10 and seven top-16 teams to lose to lower-ranked or mostly unranked opponents — even with three top-10 teams idle.

Last week’s No. 2 BYU (6-1), No. 7 Ole Miss, No. 8 Texas Tech (6-1), No. 11 Tennessee (6-2, 3-2), No. 14 Houston (6-2), No. 15 Iowa (5-2) and No. 16 USC (6-2) in the AP poll lost to UCF (4-3), Texas, Cincinnati (5-2), South Carolina (4-3, 2-3), No. 10 Utah (7-0), Minnesota (5-2) and Wisconsin (5-2).

The shakeup opened the door wide for LSU, Alabama and Texas among a slew of teams to move up the lists behind No. 1 Miami (7-0), which topped both polls Sunday for the second straight week.

No. 2 Ohio State (6-1) No. 3 Georgia (6-1, 4-1) and No. 4 Indiana (7-1) now hold those spots in both rankings with Notre Dame (6-1) and Utah (7-0) rounding out the AP and Coaches top fives, respectively.

Georgia, No. 9/8 Kentucky (7-1, 5-1) and Alabama now lead SEC contingents of three top-10 and nine top-25 representatives on each list.
