LVAY’s ‘Shootouts & Shutouts’ for LHSAA Week 5

The LHSAA’s Week 5 slate lived up to high expectations with impressive performances and close, chaotic finishes all over the state — including several that hit Louisiana vs. All Y’all’s “Shootouts” list criteria.

Nine matchups decided by less than 10 points and featuring a combined 70-plus points between the two teams not only more than doubled that Week 4 total, but also included some notably quality to go with the quantity.

Ouachita Christian, the No. 1 team in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 1A poll, hung 48 points on Homer and needed ever bit to survive, 48-46, in the matchup of proud north Louisiana programs with title traditions.

John F. Kennedy’s 42-40 win against Salmen and Lakeshore’s 41-34 win against Belle Chasse were one-score games in matchups between teams that have recent top-10 history in Class 4A.

Northshore and Plaquemine edged Ponchatoula and Brusly, respectively, in big local matchups on the north shore and west side of Baton Rouge, and Franklin Parish received another big Trey Martin performance to take care of another District 1-5A foe in Huntington.

On the “Shutouts” side, Jeanerette bounced back in emphatic fashion with a 68-0 roll past Hanson Memorial to get back on track after a Week 4 stumble. The Tigers remain one of the state’s Division-IV Non-Select teams most heavily discussed among the state-title contenders in that playoff group.
